What is Viking music? Although the Vikings left evidence behind in all aspects of culture, from language to literature and from artwork to instruments, we still remain in the dark about what type of music they created. A great mystery surrounds the potentially beautiful melodies and harmonies produced by their use of instruments. We know they used flutes, horns, drums, and lyres among others; however, with no records to reference, understanding their music is impossible. In addition, the oldest Nordic musical piece that has been discovered reliably dates back to 13th Century Denmark: “Drømde mik en drøm i nat”. Therefore, how the Viking music sounded will remain a secret lost in time.
